Mission

Launched in 2013, 10x10 set out with a pretty unique vision to fight apathy and engender a culture of giving and philanthropy in young professional and creative communities. The 10x10 formula has resonated with its audience in Australia, Asia, North America and the UK and is fast becoming a vehicle for ‘next generation’ engagement in philanthropy, whilst providing a platform for local charities and social enterprises to promote their cause to a room of socially-minded professionals.

Hong Kong was the first Asian city to host a 10x10 event in September 2016 and raised a phenomenal HK $287,000 for the 3 selected charities. This time we’re aiming even higher!

How does it work?

1. 10 event committee members organise a charity event (1 venue, 3 charities, 3 dragons, canapes and drinks).

2. Each committee member invites at least 10 of their friends, family and colleagues to attend the event (10 x 10... get it?), each pay HK $1,000 or more to attend the event, creating a pool of at least HK $100,000.

3. Upon arrival at the event the 100+ attendees are given 'Charity Dollars' equal to their ticket value.

4. Each of the three charities has five minutes to pitch to the audience in the style of the TV show, Dragons Den.  Each charity is then questioned by our guest ‘Dragons’ about their cause, business model and impact, followed by a chance for questions from the audience.

5. After the pitches, each audience member pledges their ‘Charity Dollars’ towards the charity of their choice.

The Charities

Invisible Hong Kong

For this event the committee members have chosen 3 exceptional charities under a theme of ‘Invisible Hong Kong’.

Hong Kong is one of the world’s most dynamic urban economic and cultural centres, yet amidst great affluence, serious problems lie under the surface. Staggeringly almost 20% of Hong Kong’s population live below the poverty line, struggling to access basic goods and services including safe and clean housing. One in six people in Hong Kong suffer from mental illness, which is highly stigmatized and often goes undiagnosed for years. Abuse or exploitation affecting the community of more than 300,000 domestic helpers has been called Hong Kong's "hidden shame". Although these problems may be largely unseen by a majority of the population, this 10x10 event seeks to take these invisible problems into the light.

The three charities that will be pitching on the evening are:

1. Mission for Migrant Workers

2. Society for Community Organization

3. The Richmond Fellowship of Hong Kong

Mission for Migrant Workers (MFMW)

Established in 1981, MFMW was the first grassroots organization to serve migrant workers in Hong Kong, including the community of 300,000 domestic helpers living in Hong Kong. MFMW provides crisis intervention services for domestic workers who are in distress, and gives migrant workers legal advice about their rights, assisting them to recover amounts illegally obtained by dubious employment agencies and loan sharks. MFMW also runs Bethune House which is a temporary shelter for women migrant workers in immediate danger.

Society for Community Organisation (SOCO)

Giving a voice to the voiceless, SOCO was founded in 1972 as a social welfare organization. Over 1.2 million people live below the poverty line in Hong Kong, and over 580,000 people earn less than $6000 per month. SOCO advocates to change government policy and provides social services to better the life of the most disadvantaged, including children, elderly and the homeless. Money raised by 10x10 will go directly to SOCO's Children's Rights Project which helps the 300,000 children in Hong Kong living in poverty, over 20,000 of whom live in "caged" or cubicle homes.

Richmond Fellowship of Hong Kong

Founded in 1984, Richmond Fellowship helps people suffering from mental illness and their families. Over 1.7 million people in Hong Kong have some kind of mental illness, which is largely undiagnosed because of the stigma associated with seeking treatment and the long waiting times. Money raised at 10x10 will support their unique JusTone telephone line service which provides both hotline services to members as well as proactive contact with persons suffering from mental illness and their caregivers.
